ProgressNow Colorado and Daily Kos Urge ABC Affiliate To Dump Flawed News Partner

After Media Matters featured the Pueblo Chieftain's shoddy coverage of the Colorado recall elections, ProgressNow Colorado and Daily Kos gathered 44,000 signatures on a petition urging the local ABC affiliate to end its "news partner" relationship with the paper.

During the 2013 Colorado recall elections, The Pueblo Chieftain -- a news partner of Colorado ABC News affiliate KRDO -- reported on an "ethics complaint" against Colorado State Sen. Angela Giron that was never accepted by the Secretary of State for review.

The Chieftain's coverage of the "ethics complaint" followed a revelation that the paper's general manager, production director, and assistant publisher and vice president all signed petitions in support of recalling Giron, a fact that the paper did not initially disclose but later downplayed in an editorial.

Because of its special relationship with the local ABC News affiliate, the shoddy reporting by the Pueblo Chieftain passed unchecked to the evening news in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. The petition urged KRDO to cut its ties with the paper.
